SEAI offers a wide range of grants, which can support homeowners upgrade their home, making them warmer and more energy efficient.

Home Energy Grants are available for eligible homes for a wide range of energy upgrades including Insulation, Heating Controls, Solar PV and Heat Pump Systems. Details of which grants are available under the Home Energy Grant programme can be seen below.

Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme


The scheme offers upgrades such as:

  • Attic Insulation
  • Cavity Wall Insulation
  • External Wall Insulation
  • Internal Wall Insulation
  • Other Secondary Measures e.g. lagging jackets, draught proofing and energy efficient lighting

The Better Energy Warmer Homes scheme operated by SEAI, offers a wide variety of free energy efficiency upgrades to householders in receipt of certain welfare payments.

If eligible, the scheme can help make your home warmer, healthier and cheaper to run.

Over 140,000 homes have already had energy efficiency works completed on their homes through the Better Energy Warmer Homes Scheme.

The requirements which must be met to apply for upgrades through the scheme are detailed below. If you can answer yes to the four questions below you may be eligible.

1. Do you own and live in your own home? The property must be your main residence, where you live most days of the week.

2. Was your home built and occupied before 2006?

3. You have not received works previously under the scheme. SEAI have stated that while homes that previously received works under the scheme are not currently eligible for a second visit, consideration will be given in 2021 to revisiting these homes, where feasible and appropriate.

4. Do you receive one or more of the following welfare payments?

  • Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme
  • Job Seekers Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age
  • Working Family Payment
  • One-Parent Family Payment
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance
  • Carers Allowance and live with the person you are caring for (effective from 1st August 2018)

Electricity Suppliers

Electricity suppliers are rewarding customers for carrying out energy efficiency measures in their home.

Electric Ireland: Energy Efficiency Incentive Scheme offers homeowners credit on their energy bills in addition to any SEAI home energy grants you may be eligible for. Homeowners are eligible for credit if they use one of Electric Ireland’s approved partners to complete energy upgrades on their home.

Energia: Cosy Home Scheme offers energy efficiency upgrades to homeowners at a reduced price. For further details you can make an enquiry to discuss the options for your home.

For deeper retrofit projects Energia offer up to 40% funding home energy improvements by engaging with Energia’s official partner who will help you to improve the energy efficiency of your home through SEAI grant programmes.

Better Energy Communities 


The SEAI Community Grant supports energy efficiency projects through capital funding, partnerships and technical support. The Better Energy Communities programme is a national retrofit initiative which has grant support of €28 million for 2021.

The Better Energy Community funding levels are detailed below for Residential and Non-residential buildings.

The County Monaghan SEC will be exploring their opportunities to avail of the Better Energy Comunities grant following completion of the County’s Energy Master Plan and Register of Opportunities which is currently being developed. 

Financing Energy Upgrades

There are financing options available to support your investment in home energy upgrades.

The Credit Union offers a Green Home Improvement Loan. The green home improvement loan is for anyone wishing to make improvements in their home to increase its energy efficiency at a reduced interest rate.

The Bank of Ireland offers a Green Home Improvement Loan – homeowners undertaking work on their home to improve its energy efficiency may be able to avail of the Bank of Ireland’s ‘Green home improvement loan’. The loan is the lowest available variable rate home improvement loan.

AIB offers Green Personal Loans as part of its pledge to do more to help its customers move to a low-carbon economy. The Green Personal Loan offers a lower interest rate for going green and includes home energy upgrades.
