SEAI Home Energy Grants
SEAI have a range of home energy upgrade options as well as individual grants which can support homeowners upgrade their home, making them warmer and more energy efficient.
Individual Energy Upgrade Grants
These grants are part funded with SEAI grants up to 80% of the cost of upgrade for a typical family home. The homeowner will be responsible for management of the grant application, sourcing contractor works, and completion of a follow up BER. Free Energy Upgrade Scheme: SEAI’s Free Energy Upgrades Scheme is co-funded by the Irish Government and the European Union Regional Development Fund. SEAI will facilitate fully funded energy upgrades to homeowners who are in receipt of certain welfare payments. If eligible, the scheme can help make your home warmer, healthier and cheaper to run. Over 143,000 homes have now had free energy efficiency upgrades completed on as part of the scheme. The focus of the scheme has shifted to targeting the worst performing properties, through prioritising housing which was build and occupied before 1993 and have a pre-works BER of E, F, or G. In addition, homeowners who have previously benefitted from support of the scheme will be eligible to receive further support.

To be eligible for the Free Energy Upgrade Scheme homeowners must meet the following criteria:

2. Your home was built and occupied before 2006 |
This means the ESB meter was connected, and property lived in prior to 2006 |
3. You receive one of the following welfare payments |
· Fuel Allowance as part of the National Fuel Scheme · Job Seekers Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age · Working Family Payment · One-Parent Family Payment · Domiciliary Care Allowance · Carers Allowance and live with the person you are caring for · Disability Allowance for over six months and have a child under seven years of age |
The scheme offers upgrades such as:
- Attic Insulation
- Cavity Wall Insulation
- External Wall Insulation
- Internal Wall Insulation
- Other Secondary Measures e.g., lagging jackets, draught proofing, and energy efficient lighting
- Occasionally: new heating systems, new windows and/or doors.
One Stop Shop Service
This services offers a complete home energy upgrade solution for homeowners. A one stop shop offers homeowners a package of all the services required for a complete home energy upgrade. One stop shops are registered private operators and will manage the entire process for you, from the initial assessment of your home, through to the final BER. The one stop shop service is available to homeowners and non-corporate landlords whose property or home meets the following criteria:
- Property built and occupied before 2011 for insulation and heating controls
- Property built and occupied before 2011 for renewable systems grants
- Property has an existing BER of B3 or lower and must achieve a minimum rating of B2 on work completion, with a 100kWh/m2/year or better improvement on the BER primary energy value
- Has not previously received grants for the same home energy upgrades
The grants available using a One Stop Shop cover a wider range than the Individual Energy Upgrade Grants in addition to those listed above the following grants are also available under a one stop shop service.

Better Energy Communities:
The SEAI Community Grant supports energy efficiency projects through capital funding, partnerships and technical support. The Better Energy Communities programme is a national retrofit initiative which has grant support of €28 million for 2021.

Energy Efficiency Incentive Scheme – Electric Ireland
Will give you credit on your bill in addition to any Better Energy Home Grants available from SEAI that you may be entitled to.
Energia’s Cosy Homes Deeper Retrofit Projects
Energia will offer a contribution for energy efficiency works to their customers.
Homeowners choose the energy efficiency upgrades most suited to their home and can see the fixed cash amount that SEAI and Energia will fund towards the cost of the upgrade. Ordinarily, homeowners would have to pay for these upgrades and claim the grant back at a later date. Benefits of engaging with Energia:
